Dev Log 9: 2021-11-17


We’re using the Devlog to talk about the feedback we got in our Alpha presentations on November the 3rd.

The following feedback is compiled from multiple people’s opinions:

  • We could use magic particle effects instead of arms stretching to the corners.
  • We could have different platform sizes and shapes by player choice, to add difficulty options.
  • Gravity might be too soft; the ball would have a floaty descent instead of falling quickly. Ball needs more weight.
  • We could have songs like Sackboy (Little Big Planet).
  • Audio loudness should reflect order of importance: tweak audio by reducing footsteps sound and adding a dynamic sound to indicate how close the ball is from falling off.
  • Game is too dark. Colors and stylization would make it more alive.
  • We should Iron out the game mechanics.

We experimented with some of this feedback during our reeding week break, and added the following:

  • Added particle effects on each corner. 
  • Added a gravity modifier unique to the ball, which made it fall a lot faster, and have heavier movement in general. 
  • Decreased footstep sounds.
  • Tweaked the physics. It was here where we got to detaching the players from the platform.

We've also had a meeting with our course instructor, this is the compiled list:

  • Add a checkpoint after every section.  
  • Have the platform flip when players switch sides, because currently players can move all over the level without consequence other than moving the platform to the midpoint between them. 
  • Colorblind friendly color selection. 
  • Focus on how the Characters, ball, platform look for our Beta. 
  • Make it apparent which corner is currently being pushed by which player. 
  • Add a timer without a fail condition attached to it. 
  • Have all win and lose conditions ready (general feedback).

We'll see what we can do with this feedback. You should see most of it creep into our game week by week.
